Yes! It is possible to make playdough with self raising flour, in fact it’s a very simple way to make playdough if you don’t have any cream of tartar. Cream of tartar is usually a staple ingredient in homemade playdough – it makes the dough nice and soft and helps to keep it fresh for longer.

But, if you don’t happen to have any cream of tartar in your pantry when the urge to make playdough strikes, making playdough with self raising flour is a quick and easy way to get around this missing ingredient.

To make playdough with self raising flour the cream of tartar is omitted but bicarb soda is added. I guess the bicarb combined with the raising agent in self raising flour work together to cover for the lack of cream of tartar.

This is also a very simple playdough recipe because it doesn’t require cooking. That’s right, it’s an uncooked playdough recipe without cream of tartar – your dreams have come true!

While it is a non cook recipe, it does utilise the boiling water method of making playdough so, if you’re making the playdough with your little ones helping, be sure to take care when the boiling water is added.

Here’s the ingredients you’ll need to make this simple playdough recipe with self raising flour:

Ingredients for playdough without cream of tartar

You’ll need:

  • ½ cup self raising flour
  • ½ cup plain flour
  • 1 Tablespoon bicarb soda
  • ½ cup salt
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Food colouring

It’s as simple as combining the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

Make a little well in the flour mixture and add the oil, then mix the oil through as best you can till it looks a bit like breadcrumbs. You could also add your food colouring in with the oil at this point if you are only making one colour.

It probably works better and is easier to add it now than later, but I wanted to show you how to make more than one colour with this recipe so I’m going to add my colouring once the dough is formed.

Pour in the boiling water and mix it all together.

Then tip the dough out onto a floured surface (I like to use a silicone baking mat).

If it’s sticky add more flour and knead until you get a nice smooth dough.

If you’ve already added your food colouring, then that’s it, you’re ready to play! But, if not, like me, you can divide your dough into portions and add the food colouring.

It takes a little while to work the colouring through the dough this way, but eventually you will have some nice, soft, coloured balls of playdough.

Then all that’s left to do is the fun part – play!

Method:

  • Mix together the dry ingredients.
  • Add oil (and colouring if only making one colour dough).
  • Mix the oil through until the mixture looks a little like breadcrumbs.
  • Add the boiling water and stir through.
  • Knead on a floured surface until smooth dough.
  • Divide into portions for colouring.
  • Knead through the colours until an even colour is achieved.

So, yes, it is possible to make homemade playdough without using cream of tartar, and the best way to do that is to use self raising flour!

Personally, I still think traditional playdough made with cream of tartar is better, but this self raising flour playdough is still super fun to make and play with, so, especially if you don’t have any cream of tartar in the house, you should give this playdough recipe a try.

Hii! I tried making this for my son, since store bought playdoh gets left out and hidden inside the mouth of his dinosaurs. haha my only issue is I follow led the directions exact and I have a batter, rather than a dough. It may be because is 5 am when I’m making this, but I’ll try again after my cup of coffee 🙂
