Whether you’ve come from a long way away, or you’re a local, when visiting Melbourne, there are a bunch of things to do and see. You might want to visit the Queen Victoria Market and wander through the maze of food stalls (and then stop for a coffee at one of the market’s trendy cafes before heading out).

Get around the city using our famous tram network, or if you’re feeling more like wandering around on foot, there is plenty to do and see, all within easy walking distance of the CBD. You could check out the State Library of Victoria, visit the Art Gallery or spend some time in Melbourne’s beautiful Botanical Gardens.

In any case, it should be easy to find something that will suit your tastes in this world-class city. Melbourne has been named as one of the world’s most liveable cities and, despite the changes in our weather (it’s a little unpredictable at times – but it adds to the charm!), it’s easy to see why.

There are so many fascinating things to do in Melbourne that it can be difficult to pick just ten of them. So, I’ve decided to share some of the things that I personally think are really cool, intriguing, or unique.

10 Of The Best Things To Do In Melbourne

1) Have a coffee. It sounds simple, but Melbourne is renowned around the world for its coffee so, if you’re a coffee lover, be sure to stop at cafe’s regularly while visiting Melbourne to experience a world class caffeine hit.

2) Visit Melbourne museum – there’s something for the whole family to enjoy from dinosaurs to Aboriginal art.

3) Well known for its art and culture, Melbourne is home to a world class art gallery. Check out the National Gallery of Victoria and immerse yourself in the artworks on display.

4) The sporting capital of Australia, no visit to Melbourne is complete without a visit to the MCG. The Melbourne Cricket Ground, or “The G” as it’s known to the locals is an impressive sight to behold. The home of cricket in the Summer months, but probably more famously known for its use by the AFL, or “Aussie Rules” football.

If you’ve come from another country, please try to check out a game of Aussie Rules at the MCG, it might help you to understand the locals better! You can also book a tour of the MCG which gives you access to parts of the G you wouldn’t normally be able to access as well as a fascinating tour guide who can tell you all about the history of this remarkable sporting facility.

5) Get an up-close view of the animals at one of the amazing zoos Melbourne has to offer. Take a relaxing stroll through the grounds of the Melbourne Zoo or, venture further afield to experience an African style safari at Werribee Open Range Zoo or get to know all the Australian animals at the beautiful Healesville Sanctuary

6) Check out Luna Park! If you’re travelling with kids, get down to St Kilda and have some fun on the rides and attractions at Luna Park. It’s only a small amusement park, so it probably won’t take up most of your day but, the good news is, it’s right on the beach, so you might also like to spend some time enjoy one of Melbourne’s most iconic bay beaches.

7) Enjoy a meal at one of the city’s many award-winning restaurants. We keep going on about it, but Melbourne is well known for everything from sports to art and culture, and we can’t forget the food!

While Melbourne coffee is famous around the world, the food on offer in this amazing city is pretty remarkable too. There are plenty of great restaurants in and around the city centre, or head over to the famous Lygon Street for heaps of amazing eateries (mainly Italian) as well as a great vibe.

8) Become a work of art at Artvo. This amazing interactive art gallery is so much fun. Position yourselves in just the right part of the huge artworks and murals, take a photo with your phone or camera and, voila, you’re now part of the art! So much fun for the whole family.

9) Take a ride on one of Melbourne’s famous trams (and yes, they are famous). There are not many cities left in the world that still use trams to get around. The Melbourne trams are iconic and somewhat synonymous with being in Melbourne.

Route 35 is the free city circle tram which will take you on a loop of the city – for free! It’s great for tourists to ride – hop on and off as you please whenever you see something interesting to look at!

10) Pick up a bargain at the Queen Victoria Market. A major landmark in the CBD, the Queen Victoria Market is said to be the largest open air market in the southern hemisphere, occupying 7 hectares! There’s plenty of food and fresh produce as well as clothing, shoes and souvenirs. Don’t forget to try a hot jam donut from one of the food vans!

So, pack your bags and start making plans for your trip. There’s something for everyone, you’ll have a great time in Melbourne!
