If by chance you’ve noticed that I’ve been a little quiet on here recently, there’s a simple reason – we have moved! If you’ve ever moved house before you’ll know just how much planning, preparation and ‘doing’ there is to move a family, especially when we had been in our previous house for around 24 years!

If you’re wondering why I’m telling you this, there is a reason, our new house, while only about 10 minutes away from our previous address, is on a bit more land and is subsequently not connected to the sewerage system. So our new house has been built with a septic tank/system to meet our water disposal requirements.

After we had moved in and I had purchased a hand soap for every bathroom/toilet (of which there are quite a few), we received a note from the company who installed our septic system informing us of the ways in which we need to take care of it.

Apparently a septic system does not like today’s modern day antibacterial cleaning products – they kill the bugs/bacteria in the septic system and stop it from working properly. So all of my regular foaming hand washes that I normally buy at the supermarket had to go!

We were given a couple of options for hand soaps that we could use, so I purchased some Palmolive Milk & Honey.

"palmolive

This was fine but I just couldn’t get over it not being a foaming hand soap. I much prefer the foaming soaps as they don’t drip strings of soap as you dispense them. So I set out on a quest to find a foaming hand soap that would be safe for my new septic system.

That’s when I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Tirtyl foaming hand soap is safe for septic systems! I had seen Tirtyl products online before – I guess I’m in their typical target market so their ads pop up a lot for me on social media.

To be honest, I was never overly interested as I was already content with the cleaning/soap products I already used. But, when I needed to find a foaming hand wash that I could use in my new septic system, I was delighted to give them a try.

When I discovered that you can buy Tirtyl products on Amazon I was even more excited! I love being able to take advantage of my Amazon Prime membership and save on delivery fees by buying through Amazon. So I ordered a hand soap dispenser kit which comes with one dispenser and three different ‘flavours’ of hand soap tablets.

It comes neatly (and safely) packaged like this – which is good because the hand soap dispenser is not plastic but glass.

Setting up your new hand soap couldn’t be easier – simply fill the dispenser with warm water and add one of the tablets.

Then just leave it to do its thing (dissolve) for the next 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Once the soap tablet has finished dissolving simply screw on the lid and your new foaming hand wash is ready to use!

So, what’s the verdict? Honestly, my family is divided – half of us (myself included) love it, but one or two would prefer the Palmolive honey and milk soap. The main person who doesn’t like it (my son) says that it doesn’t feel as though it cleans his hands properly – he prefers a much more caustic feeling soap.

He’s not a huge fan of the Palmolive soap either and would rather use a harsher soap to clean his hands but, as we have to use something that is safe for our septic tank, he would prefer the Palmolive over the Tirtyl.

Personally the foaming factor is the most important part of the soap to me so the Tirtyl soap wins hands down in that department. I also love anything that has a nice smell. The Tirtyl hand soaps all smell nice, although they only have a subtle scent.

I would rather have a stronger scent but I’m well aware that my septic system would prefer the scent to be clean and gentle, so I’m willing to compromise there.

I have since purchased two more starter kits (glass dispenser and three hand soap tablets) from Amazon, to have one in each of the bathrooms where the Tirtyl is preferred, and I guess I’ll keep buying the Palmolive milk & honey soap from the supermarket for the bathroom for which it is the preferred soap.

To keep the expense down I thought it would be best to buy a bulk lot of the refill tablets to use as the dispensers ran out. I was shocked to discover the cost of the refills on Amazon – they were ridiculously expensive when I was looking to buy.

It’s worth checking again in case they bring the price back to a normal price point but if they don’t, don’t panic. Buying direct from Tirtyl is easy and, for a refills only order, delivery is free!

So, that’s my tip for using Tirtyl – feel free to grab your initial start up kit from Amazon (this especially makes sense if you have a Prime membership as your delivery will be free), but then get your refills directly from tirtyl.com.au.

I’m thrilled to have such a nice product to use that is safe for my septic system, so thrilled that, next time I order refills, I will probably be tempted to try their dishwasher tablets and maybe some of their other products too!

There are a couple of other reasons to be happy about using Tirtyl products too – reducing environmental impact and supporting an Australian company! Two of my favourite things to do! Yes, Tirtyl is owned and run by Australians and they even manufacture some of their products here too!

So, if you’re looking for a foaming hand soap that is safe to use in your septic system, or if you just want to buy your soap from an environmentally conscious, Australian company, you definitely need to give Tirtyl products a try!
