When I was pregnant with my third child my older two children, who were then aged 3 and 4, liked to help to come up with name ideas for the new baby. One of their favourite suggestions was ‘Treebranch’!
While we didn’t ultimately use Treebranch for a name, it’s the sort of name that might have fitted in within a ‘hippy’ or ‘hippie’ community.
Hippie names often come from nature – think River, Rainbow and Sky, so Treebranch could have taken a place alongside some other youngsters from this sort of demographic.
But, hippie names from the 60’s have started to make a bit of a comeback recently in an era where people are often just searching for a name for their baby that isn’t so common that their child will forever be known as Jessica B. or Joshua P.
What does it mean to be a hippie? Think hippy, boho, bohemian, free spirited, flower child, peace. Other words for ‘hippie’ include: free spirit, nonconformist and flower people. In the era of long hair, flowing clothing and flower power, the hippy movement of the 1960’s and 70s was all about being true to yourself and living a natural lifestyle.
In the 2020’s the community most likely thought of as somewhat hippy would be the ‘crunchy’ parents – think, co-sleeping, attachment parenting, homeschooling etc and sometimes anti-vax and anti establishment.
Not all characteristics necessarily apply, but the ‘hippies’ of today are more likely to be somewhat more free spirited and free thinking than the rest of society and are usually also very in touch with nature. Of course you don’t have to identify as ‘hippie’ or bohemian to use a hippie name, just choose a name that you like, there are no rules here!
So, whether you’re here to find a nice, hippy sounding name for your new baby or even if you’re an author looking for a hippie name to suit a character in your latest novel or screenplay, here is a list of some beautiful hippy names for you to enjoy and be inspired by. Afterall, it’s hippy to share with peace, love and gratitude!
For ‘earthy’ or ‘nature’ hippie names all you have to do is think of something that occurs naturally in, well, nature, and you’ve got yourself an earthy hippie name. Here are some that we came up with:
